My story begins with a product idea that recycles coffee cups, lids and straws.

I should have titled this section “Down the Rabbit Hole!” The more I learn about plastic recycling, and recycling in general, the more I realize what we’re doing to our Planet! Did you know that paper coffee cups, like the ones displayed in the picture to the left, are likely going to end up in Landfills? That’s because they are only paper on the outside, and lined with Polypropylene on the inside so that hot coffee doesn’t penetrate the cup and burn you! It also keeps your coffee hotter, longer! There is a method to recycle these, but it’s very costly, the cups have to very clean/rinsed, and then “by sheer chance” happen to end up at a place that has very specialized equipment!

It would be incredibly easy for me to quote articles blaming Starbucks, to name one of many! The truth is, we as customers prefer getting into our cars and driving through the line to get our coffee served to us, in a cup that we are going to dump in a trashcan at the gas station, open the car door or roll down the window and toss out, or throw into the “everything” container at home. After all it’s paper, right? We do the same exact thing with the clear plastic drinking cups, lids, straws, catsup bottles, and food containers!
All the Starbucks stores sell reusable hot and cold cups for about two bucks. You do need to wash them after use, remember to bring them in your car with you, and go inside the store and have them filled with your coffee drink of choice! You get a ten cent discount every time you use this two dollar cup! I spoke with a Barista at my local Starbucks. In her store, out of over 500 plus unique customers a day, only 2-4 people actually bring these cups in to get coffee! Honestly, Starbucks will put their coffee into almost anything you bring in! Go to the Dollar Store and spend a “buck on a reusable cup“!
